This is the last card for section three of The Waste Land, The Fire Sermon.

Burning. Being consumed completely. Burned by desire, by love, by lust. Purified by fire, purged by it.

The narrator wants to be saved from these dark needs. He wants to be set free.

Our man is battling these demons, calling upon a higher power to pluck him out of the fire.

But, alas, it seems the higher power was deaf to his pleas and has let him burn. Completely.

This sacred heart patch was originally sewn onto a felt backing and belonged to my grandmother. Behind it, the fire.
Next week we start part four of the poem: Death by Water. From one element to another.
