It is mid-June already and here I am talking about May! I accidentally deleted all my photos of May’s Painted Diaries so I had to find the time to re-photograph my pages.

May’s theme was “Inspired by …” and we got to choose an artist that inspires us and work in their style. Oh how fun is that!?

I chose Jean-Michel Basquiat whose work is so very inspiring to me. Obviously because of the bones and anatomical elements. The crowns and the blending of text with drawings/sketches is something that I admire in his work.

As a further way of pushing myself, I decided to only use my colored pencils for the month. It was so much fun to do this! I hardly ever use them and yet they are such an accessible medium!

It was a treat to be reminded of how you don’t necessarily need expensive or extensive supplies to be able to let loose and explore.

I tried to not copy and to really just be inspired to try color blocking and loose easy sketching with colorful backgrounds and adding words here and there.

I don’t love everything I made, but I gained a lot of insight. For example, I really need to add more fluo colored pencils to my work! They look so good! Also, working loose is great and very very freeing. My love for Basquiat grew even bigger! This last photo is of my favorite page.

Thank you Riet for the permission to spend time with my favorite artist!
