For this year’s Inktober, I decided to continue where my 100 Day Project left off and to use another book of poetry as inspiration. I used Poems Bewitched and Haunted which is a lovely collection of spooky/ seasonal poems.

I used a Hanemuhle watercolor paper journal. On the left page, I illustrated the poem. On the right page, I wrote an except of the poem I was working with.

These poems were a total joy to work with. There are lots of vengeful women ghosts and witches! I believe poets (and men in general) were and are scared that these women would hold them accountable in death for their actions in life.

Some of these vengeful beings were Games of Thrones worthy! Some were very moving pieces on loss and love.

I loved this journal and how the ink pooled and moved across the pages. The monochromatic look of the drawings was also very inspiring to me. As the ink dried, it took on different hues and transparencies.

My fingers were stained black for the whole month, but it was so worth it. I love seeing these together like this.

Poems Bewitched and Haunted is part of the Everyman’s Library Pocket Poets collection.
